ASU Theatre and Dance Presents The Gospel at Colonus, Nov. 19-22
A crowd-pleasing gospel musical with a classic twist returns to the Alabama State University Theatre stage. The Gospel at Colonus will be a part of ASU’s 2019 Homecoming / Turkey Day Classic lineup and will be held Tuesday, November 19 to Friday, November 22 at the Leila Barlow Theatre at 7 p.m.
The cast of actors, singers, and dancers are led by Brian Martin, interim chair for the department of Theatre, who serves as director and teams up with Mr. Lewis Webb, Director of Choral Music at Trenholm State College. Dynamic choreography by Mr. James Atkinson, coordinator for the BFA Dance Program, highlights the brightest among Dance majors.
The Gospel at Colonus tells the powerfully redemptive story of Oedipus who is Sophocles’ tragic hero in the classical Greek trilogy. Having a life full of prophetic twists and turns that lead to devastation, this final season in his life story is both heart-wrenching and inspiring at the same time.
“I’ve always been captured by the imagined but all too close to reality this character, Oedipus, goes through,” Martin said. “I’m so honored to introduce it to yet another generation of Theatre & Dance students. It’s a gospel musical and classic all at the same time.”
